How to Clean a Yellow and Dull-Stained Ceramic Sink

Ceramic sinks give a similar look to porcelain enamel, but they won't break easily because the entire container is ceramic, not enamel on metal.

Launching from Home Guides SF Gate, this sink requires care similar to porcelain to keep it white and shiny.

Usually, this ceramic sink will be more dull and stained due to lime scale and hard water deposits. The scale traps the dye on the surface of the sink and the stain worsens over time the slag layer becomes thicker.

Proper cleaning and periodic descaling whitens the ceramic so that it looks new again. Here's how to clean a ceramic sink to make it shine again.

1. Use dish soap and hot water

First, mix one tablespoon of liquid dish soap with 1.8 liters of hot water. Use dish soap that contains a grease-cutting agent if the inside of the sink feels greasy.

2. Clean with a sponge

Then, clean the inside of the sink with dish soap and a slightly abrasive sponge, and rinse with clean water.

3. Use white vinegar

After that, install the drain, then fill the sink with a solution of one part white vinegar and three parts hot water.

Soak the sink in the solution for 30 to 60 minutes to remove scale buildup, stains, and soap residue.

4. Drain the vinegar water

Afterward, drain the vinegar water from the sink. Scrub a second time with a solution of dish soap and vinegar to remove any remaining dirt in the sink. Rinse with clear water.

5. Clean the sink with a towel

When the steps are complete, wipe the sink with a clean towel after washing. Sink drying makes it shiny white and prevents scale and water stains that can dull white ceramic surfaces.

Warning

Do not use bleach on ceramic sinks as this can spoil the finish. Avoid highly abrasive products, such as bristle brushes and scouring powder.

Strong abrasives will scratch the ceramic, trapping dirt and turning it dull instead of shiny white.
