Causes of Electric Short Circuit and How to Overcome It

Several factors can cause a fire in the house, such as a gas leak that can cause an explosion, and an electrical short.

Short circuit refers to a certain condition where the electricity deviates outside the established path of the electric current.

Reporting from The Spruce, a short circuit occurs when an electric current completes its current journey through a shorter distance than the wires attached to it.

Here are the causes of an electric short circuit and how to fix it.

Broken and Loose Circuit Wire Insulation

Old or damaged insulation allows the neutral and hot wires to come into contact, which can cause a short circuit.

Nail and screw punctures, as well as worn-out switches can cause the wire sheath or insulation to break and cause a short circuit.

Another cause is animal pests such as rats gnawing the circuit cable then the inner cable conductor can be exposed and cause a short circuit.

In addition, a short circuit can occur due to loose fittings. Repairing a broken cable connection is very tricky and is best handled by those who are really familiar with cabling work.

However, you can prevent it in the following ways.

Circuit Breaker or Fuse

Almost all new or updated wiring systems are protected by a main service panel that houses the individual circuit breakers that control the individual circuits in the house. Older wiring installations provide similar protection through fuses.

Circuit breakers use an internal spring system or compressed air to sense changes in current flow and disconnect the circuit when a deviation occurs, such as a sudden unimpeded flow of current that occurs during a short circuit.

Ground-Fault Circuit Breaker (GFCI)

These devices provide a similar function to circuit breakers in that they sense changes in current flow, but they are much more sensitive than circuit breakers and turn off current flow when they sense very small current fluctuations.

Arc-Fault Circuit Breaker (AFCI)

You can think of AFCI as a device that anticipates a short circuit and shuts off the power before it can reach the short circuit state.

AFCI is most useful for preventing arc fires. AFCI protection can be provided by an AFCI circuit breaker or AFCI outlet.
