6 Types of Ceramics That Are Widely Used for Home Floors

Ceramic is one of the important elements in a dwelling even though it is the final component that is completed when building a house. Ceramics not only make the house look clean and organized, but can also be a decorative element that makes the house seem luxurious and more attractive.

There are many types of ceramics on the market. Each type of ceramic has its own texture, motif, color, size, material, advantages and disadvantages. The better the quality, the more expensive the price. At least, there are six types of ceramics for floors that are widely used. Anything? See below.

Standard Ceramic

Standard tile is one of the most common types of floor tiles used in homes. This is because standard ceramics are suitable for application in many areas of the house. In addition, this type of ceramic is easy to install, clean, and is available in hundreds of styles that can be adapted to any design.

"The increased durability makes this ceramic suitable for any room in the house such as the kitchen, bathroom, even the entryway," said Tony Castellano, senior merchant at The Home Depot.

Porcelain Ceramic

The other most common type of ceramic is porcelain ceramics. Porcelain tile has a brighter and glossy appearance than standard ceramic, but is not slippery. This type of ceramic has a variety of color choices that are tailored to your needs, from white, beige, to gray.

You could say that porcelain tiles are versatile tiles. Porcelain tiles are available in a variety of designs, colors, and styles that have versatility when designing spaces. Apart from indoors, porcelain can be used outdoors because its texture will not freeze, fade, or crack.

Even this ceramic can be applied to bathroom and kitchen floors. “The appeal of porcelain comes from its ability to imitate natural stone, brick, or wood and does not require any maintenance,” says Castellano.

Marble Ceramic

Having a shiny appearance, very smooth texture, large size, and the manufacturing process is not easy, making marble has an expensive price. No wonder, making marble a favorite ceramic of the upper class. This type of ceramic is widely used in luxury homes and star hotels.

Marble is able to give a classy and elegant impression to the dwelling. However, marble requires a lot of care to keep it looking beautiful, pure, and smooth. Similar to other ceramics, marble is also easily scratched and exposed to stains that are difficult to clean.

Therefore, Castellano recommends that marble is best applied in areas of the floor that are minimally passed.

He says many homeowners avoid using marble on the countertops and instead apply marble in the shower floor and column areas. “By using it in slightly more quantities, you can save on a budget.”

Granite Ceramic

Granite is a natural stone that has a look and feel similar to marble due to its natural flecks. However, granite has some important differences from marble. Granite has a smooth, glossy, luxurious appearance, large size, natural-looking colors, and unquestionable quality.

Granite is usually used by the upper middle class or alternative with a limited budget to use marble. “Granite has been overused and tends to look like a cheaper alternative,” says Melissa Morgan, interior designer and founder of M Interiors in San Antonio, Texas, United States.

Square Ceramic

Square or quarry ceramics are made of earth material in a process that is very similar to brick although technically stronger. Square ceramics are made from earth minerals, such as feldspar, clay, and shale that are ground together and then baked at temperatures of over 2,000 degrees Celsius.

Because it is fired at very high temperatures, making the texture of this tile naturally dense, non-porous, durable, and water-resistant with a very low water absorption rate. The squares can be glazed or left in a natural finish.

No wonder this ceramic is widely applied in areas of the house that are often passed, such as living rooms, family rooms, and rooms, offering the impression of a design that is purposeful and naturally non-slip. Although durable, this type of ceramic is prone to stains. For this reason, it should not be used in the kitchen.

Ceramic Mosaic

Mosaic tiles come in various shapes, motifs, colors, and materials. Generally, this type of ceramic is small because it is formed from pieces of ceramic and glass. In addition to the floor, ceramic mosaic can also be applied to the walls of the kitchen or bathroom.

Mosaic ceramics can add decorative elements and give a more lively impression. However, the lack of ceramic mosaics is less absorbent and not timeless, eyebrows quickly look old-fashioned because they are patterned.
